School Management
(1)School's Major Concerns : Theme:
Learn smarter, Live better, Achieve higher

Major concerns:
1. Foster self-management and learning abilities in students.
2. Improve students' English proficiency.
3. Promote physical and social-emotional well-being in students.
(2) School Management Organisation : Under the school-based management framework, teachers and parents participate directly in school decision making. The collective wisdom of school managers helps improve the teaching and learning environment as well as the effectiveness of students' learning. All managers work together to ensure better school management and enhance the performance of our school.
(3) Incorporated Management Committee / School Management Committee / Management Committee : In 2007, the Incorporated Management Committee of the school was established. With the spirit of school-based management, different stakeholders like the school sponsoring body, the principal, teachers, parents, alumni and independent members take part in decision making so as to enhance the quality and effectiveness of education.
(4) School Green Policy : Our school strives to promote environmental education. In order to raise the awareness of environmental protection among students, our school has organised various activities by which students have become more concerned about the well-being of the globe. The effort and achievements of our school are acknowledged. Owing to our contribution, we have won School Honours Award under Schools Environmental Award Scheme for 5 consecutive years, Community Project Award and Devotion of Promotion of Sustainable Development Honours Award (in recognition of receiving the SD Community Project Award for nine consecutive years) of the Sustainable Development School Award Programme, and also the Bronze Award in the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (Schools: Secondary). We have gained the tremendous honour of being a "Green School".
Learning and Teaching Plan
(1) Whole-school Language Policy : Since the establishment of our school, we have persisted in mother-tongue teaching. To enhance students' capability of handling trilingualism is also our school major concern. We firmly believe that mother tongue is the most effective medium of instruction for our students by which they can fully acquire the subject knowledge and develop higher-order thinking skills. Concurrently, English language learning is always a top priority. We adopt small class teaching in S.1-S.3 English lessons. We are devoted to creating a favourable English learning environment for our students. Launching different English learning programmes has greatly enhanced the English standards of our students.
Mathematics and Integrated Science subjects at Junior Forms and Senior Forms are taught and assessed using English in our school. English textbooks are adopted. This aims to increase students' exposure to English and the chance in using the language, thereby enhancing their confidence in learning English and facilitating a smoother transition to university.
(2) Learning and Teaching Strategies : We received the honour of Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (2016/2017) in “Science Education Key Learning Area”. To improve learning effectiveness through the enhancement of students' self-learning skills is our school major concern. Apart from the implementation of e-learning, we also create student learning communities and equip students with learning strategies. Our teachers are responsive, hardworking, dedicated and innovative. Significant enhancement in the professional qualification of teachers can be seen. The professional development and mentorship schemes of our school encourage peer lesson observation, collaborative lesson preparation, lesson study and other informal sharing among our teachers. To cater for students' diverse learning needs, we adjust the curriculum according to students' individual differences.
To foster self-management and learning abilities in students, we train them with 9 Key Learning Habits (KLHs) for efficient learning. Decorating our campus with English signs & quotes and increasing the proportion of English elements in school activities are our key steps to provide an enriched English learning environment. Apart from English subject, Math subject and Science subjects also get involved in promoting English teaching and learning. These subjects collaborate and use common teaching strategies for enhancing students' learning in and through English.
Cross-curricular integration is implemented to reduce overlapping content and make good use of the teaching resources. The junior secondary subject, Life and Society, aims at helping students to develop a positive understanding of oneself and to become informed and responsible citizens.
Our school is also devoted to promoting STEAM education so as to help students develop a solid knowledge foundation and enhance their interests in Science, Technology and Mathematics, to strengthen their ability to integrate and apply knowledge and skills to solve authentic problems, as well as to foster innovation and design thinking skills as required in the 21st century.
(3) School-based Curriculum : 1. Electives: 3X. Our students are given proper guidance to decide on the elective subjects that best suit their interests, aptitudes and abilities.
2. Curriculum highlights: Our school provides cross-curriculum project-based learning activities to junior form students. The main themes of learning activities are about value education, Chinese traditional culture and healthy lifestyles. We aim at fostering students' proper values and attitudes (such as perseverance and caring for others) and developing their generic skills (such as collaboration skills and creativity).
(4) Major Renewed Emphases in the School Curriculum : 1. Cross-curricular project-based learning activities in junior forms
2. Subject-based project learning in junior forms
3. Life-wide learning activities in all forms
4. Cross-KLAs (Key Learning Areas) collaboration on common teaching and learning strategies in EMI subjects
5. English activities related to classic books
(5) Life Planning Education : Help students make a wise decision on further studies or careers through effective life planning education and related activities.
Student Support
(1) Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity : Apart from fostering curriculum development and the enhancement & remedial work at different learning stages, we also cater for student diversity by collaborative teaching and varying instructional grouping, especially in English, Mathematics and Integrated Science lessons. Besides, the adaptation of the curriculum, the design of classroom activities and the arrangement of extended learning activities as well as the peer learning groups after class are the measures to meet students' needs.
(2) Whole School Approach to Integrated Education : Our school is committed to establishing an inclusive and caring campus. The Whole School Approach is adopted to support the students with special educational needs. The Student Support Team of our school is composed of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), teachers from Discipline and Counselling Teams, a social worker and an educational psychologist. Our school has utilized the Learning Support Grant to hire additional staff and procure professional services such as speech therapy services and tutoring services. Our school also places great emphasis on home-school cooperation. Teachers are involved in communicating with parents of students with special educational needs on a regular basis.
(4) Measures to Provide Adaptation for Learning and Assessment : To review the learning and teaching effectiveness, assignments are designed according to the teaching and learning activities, and also students' different capabilities. Various modes of continuous assessment are used in different subjects. Summative assessments are carried out through one uniform test and two term-end examinations annually.
Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos
(1) Home-School Co-operation : It is generally agreed that family involvement in school education is vital in bringing about positive learning outcomes of children. Without doubt, the active involvement of our parents has given fresh impetus to the development of our school.
(2) School Ethos : Our teachers have long been committed to nurturing students' virtue and righteousness by embracing the principles of positive discipline (being kind and firm). Through participating in different training and activities, our students are able to foster a set of positive values. Moreover, our students are generally praised for their self-discipline, courtesy and good characters. The co-operative and helping culture among our students makes BWLSS a more caring campus.
Future Development
(1) School Development Plan : 1. Cultivate students' self-management and learning abilities
- Nurture students to be conscientious learners by developing 9 Key Study Habits;
- Develop students' generic skills and cross-curricular learning ability.
2. Improve students' English proficiency
- Increase students' exposure and use of English in the campus;
- Improve students' speaking ability and expand their vocabulary bank of different subjects.
3. Promote the physical and social-emotional wellness of students
- Raise students’ health awareness and improve their physical wellness;
- Help students address their social-emotional needs and develop a positive attitude towards life.
(2) Teacher Professional Training and Development : We conduct self-evaluation and validate the findings through external reviews. The process turns our teachers into reflective practitioners who can see their own strengths and weaknesses. Our teachers are keen to upgrade themselves through continuing professional development. As our school has become a learning community, there is momentum for sustainable development and continuing improvement.
In order to enhance teaching and learning effectiveness and strengthen teachers’ professional capacity, we participated in the Quality School Improvement Project (QSIP) established by the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research (HKIER) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) since 2019, in which teachers were equipped with the skills of collaborative lesson planning, lesson observation and self-improved mechanism. We had a team of senior teachers to conduct "Open Lessons" last year. All teachers were welcomed to observe the lessons.
This year, lesson study is promoted in all subjects. Teachers will collaborate on designing and revising the lesson plan. A post-lesson conference will be held as it is a valuable opportunity for teachers and observers to share good teaching strategies and practices, and refine the lesson plan for better learning outcomes.
Life-wide Learning (Including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be Provided through Key Learning Areas, Extra-curricular Activities, Co-curricular Activities, etc.) : Our school is devoted to providing over 40 different kinds of extra-curricular activities for students so that their potential and interest can be fully developed. We encourage our students to take part in various competitions and impressive results have been obtained. Besides, Learning Activity Day is held twice a year. Additionally, our school organizes learning activity days twice a year, along with life-wide learning activities arranged across various disciplines. These activities include field trips at coastal parks, guided tours of museums, and visits to the elderly homes. These activities allow students to engage with the community and the natural environment, make the connection between knowledge and experiential learning, thereby boosting students' motivation in learning and academic performance.
Others : Over the past twenty-eight years, we have achieved a lot with the concerted efforts of our teachers. We first gained the honour of "Experimental School" in the UNESCO Project on Education for Environment, Population and Sustainable Development. We also obtained the title of "Example School" in the UNESCO Project on Education for Sustainable Development in China. Our teachers received the honour of Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence twice in “Science Education Key Learning Area” as well as "Guidance and Discipline". Numerous top prizes in sports, arts and volunteer service of our students show the great recognition and acknowledgement for our contribution and commitment to education.
