School Characteristics School Characteristics
School Management
(1)School's Major Concerns : 1. To foster lifelong learners equipped with effective learning skills and broad horizons.
2. To nurture students' positive values and promote healthy life styles.
(2) School Management Organisation : The Incorporated Management Committee adopts an open style, emphasize accountability and welcomes all stakeholders to take part in the setting up of school goals and policies that best meet the needs of the school and students.
(3) Incorporated Management Committee / School Management Committee / Management Committee : Po Leung Kuk Centenary Li Shiu Chung Memorial College Incorporated Management Committee
(4) School Green Policy : To promote environmental protection, we encourage students to participate in large variety of educational schemes such as collecting reusable materials. Through these activities, students learn to treasure resources, save energy and protect the environment. In line with the Po Leung Kuk green policy, we have taken part in the 'Carbon Audit' programme in an effort to make a green environment.
Learning and Teaching Plan
(1) Whole-school Language Policy : English is used as the medium of instruction in most of the subjects. Through taking part in a wide range of fun English activities, students' English standard is much enhanced. For Chinese, their standard is raised through the Extensive Reading Scheme, Chinese week and the speech and public speaking contests. On top of the above, Putonghua is added to the F.1-F.3 curriculum. All these are in line with the government policy of grooming biliterate and trilingual individuals.
(2) Learning and Teaching Strategies : Being student-centred, we provide opportunities for students to broaden their experience and outlook to be lifelong learners. We help them develop skills and desire for autonomous learning and cultivate in them the love for reading and a positive attitude towards life.
(3) School-based Curriculum : 1. Electives: 3X and 4X. Students may choose to take 3 or 4 electives according to their abilities.
2. Curriculum highlights: Teachers will design suitable curriculum for students with different abilities.
(4) Major Renewed Emphases in the School Curriculum : Reading habits are cultivated through various Chinese and English Reading Schemes. Students’ interest in reading is aroused through various activities like Morning Reading Session, promotion of new books, Morning Book Sharing Sessions, Reading Circles and World Book Day (Reading week). A sophisticated cross-curricular project has long been arranged in junior forms to enable students to learn the required skills as early as possible.
In order to foster a healthy and all rounded personal growth of students, the Guidance Committee organizes various activities like form teacher periods, 'Positive Dynamics' scheme, ‘I can do it’ award scheme, ‘Heart to heart’ award scheme, National Week, mentorship scheme and adventure based programme (UAP). A whole school approach is adopted for the annual school-wide mass programme. Collaborations with subjects and with the Activities Committee are made to benefit students. Various themes of different foci such as 'Our School', 'Life planning' and ‘Mutual Respect’ were adopted.
The use of IT has been fast growing in the campus. As one of the first batch of schools joining EDB's Wifi 900 project, enhancement works for our school WiFi infrastructure have been completed by fall 2015. Network equipment has been updated regularly and smart TVs have been installed in all classrooms, which in turn provides stronger support for e-learning. All subjects are actively developing Blended Learning which supports the dissemination of teaching materials, teaching activities, exercises and tests. These successfully raise students' self study skills for life-long learning and nurture in them a positive attitude towards learning.
(5) Life Planning Education : Through different types of programmes about careers and life planning education, like self-understanding and goal-setting for junior forms, F.3 Information Day on Subject Streaming, careers talks, Careers Exploration Day and Mock Interview Workshops, students can acquire a reasoned and realistic approach to their careers planning and strengthen their self-understanding. Thus they are better equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitude to make wise choices.
Student Support
(1) Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity : Catering for learner differences is one of our school's key tasks. We focus on the classroom level of the issue like graded exercises, grouping and questioning techniques. Curriculum support to Junior Forms includes: Chinese, English and Mathematics remedial classes, tutorial classes after school and during school holidays and enhancement classes for elite students. In Senior Forms, there is maximized flexibility in choice of elective subjects to cater for students of diverse abilities. Elite students are given opportunities to broaden their horizons, and are encouraged to participate in various inter-school competitions.
(2) Whole School Approach to Integrated Education : To enhance the effectiveness of integrated education, timely goals with corresponding policies and measures are set up in our school to cater for students with special educational needs (SEN):
1. Teacher training: School-based staff development days and talks are run to enhance teachers’ understanding of integrated education and SEN students. Teachers will take turns to enroll in relevant courses.
2. Curriculum accommodation: Adaptations to coursework assignments and examinations are incorporated to cater for students with SEN.
3. Flexible use of Learning Support Grant (LSG): With LSG, counselling and training support services like speech therapy are provided to students with SEN.
4. Deployment of extra resources: Students with SEN are granted professional support from the school social workers and the educational psychologists from Po Leung Kuk.
5. Student Support Team and SEN Coordinator are responsible for providing professional support to SEN students.
(4) Measures to Provide Adaptation for Learning and Assessment : There are 2 exams in a year. The weighting of the First and yearly examinations is 45% and 55% of the annual result respectively. Also, there is a 4-day uniform test for F.1-F.3 in each term. The continuous assessment of students' learning progress is done through quizzes, tests, projects, homework and class performance.
Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos
(1) Home-School Co-operation : We have high-quality parents who not only take good care of their children but also spare their free time to assist with school work and run the parent-teacher association. Our PTA plays a key role in home-school communication. Their assistance in promoting parent education helps parents understand students' needs during adolescence, and improve their communication with their own children. The PTA also actively participates in community service, thus winning the commendation from the Agency of Volunteer Services and the Community.
(2) School Ethos : The school values decency and self discipline in children. To support students' balanced growth, various services are provided such as guidance services (including teacher counselors, social workers and professionals such as educational psychologists, speech therapists, etc.), group counseling, career guidance, Big Brothers and Sisters Scheme and the Mentorship Scheme.
