School Characteristics School Characteristics
School Management
(1)School's Major Concerns : 1. To enhance students' learning capacity and scholastic quality through comprehensive strategies in teaching and learning.
2. To instill positive values and life-long aspiration into students and nurture them to become future leaders with national and global mindset.
(2) School Management Organisation : The IMC proactively supports the development of the school. The school-based policy is executed under the leadership of the Principal. The Administration and Policy Consultation Committee, Teaching and Learning Affairs Division and Student Support Division jointly set the school's direction, formulate policies and guide the development of different panels to ensure proper delegation of responsibilities.
(3) Incorporated Management Committee / School Management Committee / Management Committee : The IMC is made up of representatives of the sponsoring organization, various stakeholders as well as independent individuals (including professors, pastors and laypersons with management experience).
(4) School Green Policy : We adopt a whole school approach in waste reduction, energy conservation and recycling with assistance from Student Environmental Ambassadors. We have activated Hong Kong's largest commissioned school solar power project under the CLP Renewable Energy Feed-in-Tariff Scheme to promote green living.
Learning and Teaching Plan
(1) Whole-school Language Policy : The school adopts English as the medium of instruction in all classes and most of the subjects. To strengthen students’ ability in learning other subjects in English, we allocate extra resources to foster a language rich environment. Daily activities, such as announcements, assemblies, and school events are conducted in English supplemented by Putonghua and Cantonese to ensure that our students are biliterate and trilingual. Our school had hosted exchange students from foreign countries including France, Argentina, Türkiye, Italy, USA, Germany, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, so as to enhance students’ English speaking proficiency and broaden their horizons.
(2) Learning and Teaching Strategies : Our school aims to provide a broad-based and balanced curriculum which helps students achieve balanced development in moral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic and spiritual aspects. We also focus on fostering independent thinking skills and developing a proactive and positive outlook in life. Since 2015, the school has been progressively implementing self-directed learning and e-learning in junior forms. By allowing students to reflect on their learning experiences, greater effectiveness in learning can be achieved. Our school emphasizes on the development of self-directed learning, providing vertical synergy in senior form subjects. We also offer a broad range of subjects for our senior secondary curriculum, along with the establishment of a talent pool and after-school enrichment and enhancement classes to cultivate and develop the potential of elite students.
(3) School-based Curriculum : 1. Electives: 3X. Students can choose 3 electives from 11 options according to their strengths and interest. Students have the flexibility to choose their combination of subjects. Besides, other language courses such as Japanese are offered by other institutions.
2. Curriculum highlights: Our school caters to students’ learning diversity and promotes quality education. Not only are various enhancement, enrichment, and remedial classes provided, but Saturday support classes and junior form English tutorial classes are also provided to tailor to students’ learning needs. Language Arts and English Literature have been integrated into the junior form English curriculum. Not only does this provide a venue for students to express themselves in English, but it is also an opportunity to learn western cultures and broaden one’s worldview. Our school has recommended a Chinese book list to junior form students and has its own teaching materials which combine selected Classical Chinese Literature and notable Chinese Philosophy works. This enables students of all forms to develop a sense of aesthetics and appreciation for Chinese culture. The Mathematics department offers the Mathematics Olympiad programme for various forms. We encourage students to take part in competitions to improve their problem-solving skills. To develop students’ civic awareness and critical thinking skills, junior form Life and Society requires students to analyze current affairs and issues. Senior form students gain valuable learning experiences through the integration of service learning and curriculum.
(4) Major Renewed Emphases in the School Curriculum : 1. Reading to Learn: A structured Self-directed Reading Scheme (SDRS) is implemented to promote intensive and extensive learning.
2. Project Learning: The school has implemented a series of cross-curricular programmes for junior form students, namely Experiential Project Learning (F.1), STEAM (F.2) and Service Learning (F.3). These structured programmes will enrich students' learning experiences, promote high-order thinking, and sharpen their critical thinking and collaboration skills.
3. ICT: The school emphasizes the cultivation of students’ problem-solving skills, programming skills and self-learning skills which equip students to be life-long learners. The new direction of junior form CL curriculum is "ABCD". (A: AI; B: Big Data; C: Coding; D: Design Thinking) Our school also promotes STEAM across various platforms, including project learning in F.2, formal curriculum, Project Alpha, extra-curricular activities and service learning.
4. MCNE: The school utilizes assemblies, class teacher periods and OLE to foster positive values and attitudes, and civic awareness among our students. In addition, we hope to nurture our students to be servant leaders with global horizons through the abovementioned means. Various activities are held to instill national identity in students and foster their passion for Chinese history and culture. Furthermore, our school provides a complete framework in service-based learning to cultivate the spirit of service among students (F.1: Class service, F.2: Whole-school service, F.3: Community service, F.4-F.6: Service Learning x KLA).
(5) Life Planning Education : The Career and Life Planning Committee offers structured training to students through class teacher periods, morning assemblies, hall assemblies, talks and other school functions. The training aims to allow students to understand their personal needs starting from F.1 and to set goals for life according to the needs as soon as possible. Our school has a vast network of alumni providing various internship opportunities for senior form students, which increases their exposure to the real world and help build their social circles. Besides, we hold "Dialogues with CEOs and Entrepreneurs", a program aiming to broaden students' horizons and deepen their understanding of the workplace.
Student Support
(1) Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity : A dual class teacher system is implemented from F.1 to F.5. A wide variety of enhancement and remedial measures are introduced, with the collaboration of all departments, to ensure that students’ diverse learning needs are met. Our school also provides support for gifted students. We offer various learning opportunities to gifted students, including nominating students to attend gifted classes offered by universities.
(2) Whole School Approach to Integrated Education : Our school is dedicated to establishing a harmonious ambience by adopting the Whole School Approach for students with SEN. To provide further support to the SEN students, our school deploys the Learning Support Grant, the NCS SEN Grant and community resources to provide adequate support to students with SEN, including hiring extra manpower and outsourcing professional services (e.g. Clinical Psychologist counselling service). Our school supports SEN students through the Student Support Team which includes the Principal, SEN Committee (including the student support teaching assistant and the school-based educational psychologist), Guidance Committee, Discipline Committee and the School Social Workers.
(3) Education Support for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Students : Our school provides additional support for NCS students to facilitate their learning of Chinese: appointing additional teacher(s)/teaching assistant(s) to support NCS students’ learning of Chinese; arranging intensive Chinese learning and teaching mode(s), e.g. pull-out learning if necessary, split-class/group learning, etc.; and organising activities to create an inclusive learning environment in the school.
(4) Measures to Provide Adaptation for Learning and Assessment : There are 2 uniform tests and 2 exams throughout the academic year. The first term results and the second term results are worth 40% and 60% of the total score, respectively. Each subject will incorporate a standardized percentage of the total score for continuous assessment items in order to improve students’ learning efficiency and reduce the pressure of examinations. Examples include class participation, uniform tests, short quizzes, themed reports, and book reports. Our school will also provide tailored learning and assessment framework for students with special needs.
Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos
(1) Home-School Co-operation : The school has established a close partnership with the Parent-Teacher Association. PTA supports various school functions such as Teacher's Day and the monitoring of the canteen’s food quality. Also, PTA holds various talks, lunch gatherings and interest classes in order to enhance mutual understanding between school and parents.
(2) School Ethos : Our students are humble and of great moral integrity. We adopt a holistic counselling approach in which the whole teaching staff works collaboratively with the guidance team well-supported by the school social workers and educational psychologists to provide professional counseling service. The Big Brothers and Sisters Scheme and various school functions involving parents are carried out to support the growth of students. We have cultivated a harmonious school culture which brings love and care.
