School Characteristics School Characteristics
School Management
(1)School's Major Concerns : 1. Learning Means
2. Lamwooers’ Wellness
(2) School Management Organisation : There are three divisions (Management and Organisation, Learning and Teaching, Student Support and School Ethos) which oversee the work of eight sections, including Administrative, Careers, Discipline, Extra-curricular Activities, General Affairs, Guidance, Learning and Teaching, and Moral and Civic Education Sections in the school. Teachers are consulted when major decisions are made. Consultative Committee is formed to enhance communication and mutual understanding between members of the Incorporated Management Committee and teachers.
(3) Incorporated Management Committee / School Management Committee / Management Committee : Incorporated Management Committee has been established since 2015.
(4) School Green Policy : Our school has implemented a green school policy and developed plans to make the school more environmentally friendly. These plans include initiatives to reduce waste, promote waste recycling, enhance parent education on environmental issues, and disseminate information related to conservation.
Learning and Teaching Plan
(1) Whole-school Language Policy : English is the main Medium of Instruction in our school. We have two native English teachers who assist students in developing their English communication skills. Our language policy aims to increase students' exposure to English through the English Award Scheme and regular English Speaking Days. School announcements are made in both English and Putonghua. We have both Chinese and English Debate Teams, both of which have achieved success and won awards in various inter-school debating contests. Additionally, the Lam Woo Foundation has generously provided language scholarships to students demonstrating excellent performance in Chinese, English and Putonghua.
(2) Learning and Teaching Strategies : We place a strong emphasis on training our students to be biliterate and trilingual. In the junior forms, students are streamed based on their abilities in English and Mathematics, while in the senior forms, they are streamed based on their abilities in Chinese and English. This approach ensures that we can better cater to the individual needs of our students. Students also acquire generic skills and high-order thinking skills through various academic subjects. In the junior forms, both boys and girls have the opportunity to take Design and Technology and Home Economics to develop their life skills. In the senior forms, students have a wide range of subject choices in arts, science and commerce. We have implemented two school-based subjects called Language Across the Curriculum and Language Arts specifically designed for S.1 and S.2 students to facilitate their adaptation to the new English-learning environment. Our school library provides ample space for book exhibitions and talks on good books, and the school website is regularly updated with relevant information.
(3) School-based Curriculum : 1. Electives: 2X and 3X. For students studying three elective subjects in S.4, one elective subject can be dropped after the First Examination.
2. Curriculum highlights: S.1 Language Across the Curriculum, S.1 and S.2 Language Arts and Literature and S.5 General Education.
(4) Major Renewed Emphases in the School Curriculum : Lam Woo General Education in S.5 utilizes the space created by replacing 'Liberal Studies' with 'Citizenship and Social Development' in the HKDSE curriculum. Students can choose from eighteen options covering diverse subjects like forensic anthropology, sign language, and flight simulation. General Education classes provide a refreshing break from regular subjects and offer new insights and experiences to enrich students' school lives. We have established a Reading Promotion Committee to encourage reading among our students. Regular book sharing sessions are conducted by teachers and students to broaden their horizons. Additionally, we organise annual events such as the Old Book Sale and Book Fair to further promote reading. Moreover, we arrange regular book exhibitions and invite renowned authors to give talks as part of our ongoing efforts to foster a love for reading. In terms of Information Technology (IT) in learning, our teachers have received training ranging from basic to advanced levels. We have an intranet and an eClass integrated platform to facilitate the sharing and circulation of information. All classrooms and special rooms are equipped with computers and projectors. Furthermore, we have implemented mobile learning in classrooms to encourage students' self-directed learning. A WiFi network is also available throughout the school campus to promote IT integration in learning. Moral and Civic Education is an integral part of our school curriculum. Each year, we focus on specific values, qualities, and attitudes that align with the qualities of a LAMWOOER. Moral education is integrated into various aspects of school life, including form teacher periods, form assemblies and school assemblies. The Moral and Civic Education Section promotes politeness, classroom cleanliness, civic-mindedness, and self-management skills. We also organise activities related to national and civic education, such as the Flag Raising Ceremony on National Day, exhibitions, talks, forums, and inter-class and joint-school quizzes.
(5) Life Planning Education : To nurture students with a positive psychological state that facilitates their flourishing in life, we assist junior form students in exploring their interests, abilities, and the relationship between their personality and occupations. This helps them make informed decisions regarding subject selection in the senior forms and develop a preliminary concept of career planning and management. In the senior forms, we aim to enrich students' learning experiences in career planning through various activities, including talks, workshops, visits, and work experience programmes. These initiatives help students understand the importance of career planning and enable them to set appropriate learning and career goals. To continuously improve our career education, we adopt a whole-school participation approach. We collaborate with partners and stakeholders to implement career planning and life skills education curriculum. Government subsidies are utilized to hire additional teachers, reducing the workload of career teachers and senior form Form Teachers. This allows them to dedicate more time to in-depth career counseling and further enhance the career education curriculum. We also strive to provide students with work-related experiences. Through different learning modes, we help students at all levels enhance their understanding of the world of work and employability. We encourage students to take an active role in personal planning and consider their future career development direction.
Student Support
(1) Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity : In terms of academics, our school implements various measures to improve students' proficiency in Chinese, English, and Mathematics while addressing learning differences. For students in S.2 and S.3, we adopt ability grouping by offering advanced classes in English and Mathematics, as well as remedial classes in Chinese, English, and Mathematics. Additionally, we provide enrichment courses and study groups after school to cater to varying learning abilities and fully unleash students' potential. Apart from these measures, our teachers actively explore and implement diverse teaching strategies to accommodate learning differences within the classroom. A Special Education Needs Committee has been established to support students with special educational needs. To address learner diversity, the senior forms have split the four classes into five, allowing for more individual attention, support, and increased opportunities for student interaction. In the non-academic aspect, our school has formed a dedicated team to develop policies and support students' physical, mental, and social well-being. We place special emphasis on cultivating students' healthy habits, positive attitudes and values, life skills, and methods to resist temptation.
(2) Whole School Approach to Integrated Education : Our school adopts a 'whole-school approach' to promote inclusive education. We have established a Student Support Team, consisting of the Vice Principal, teacher coordinators, and subject teachers in Chinese, English, and Mathematics, to provide support for students with special educational needs. Teachers are also encouraged to participate in relevant courses on inclusive education to enhance their professional capabilities. Our school flexibly utilizes the 'Learning Support Grant' and other internal resources to provide diverse support for students with special educational needs. This includes hiring inclusive education tutors and assistants to provide appropriate support to students. Additionally, our school offers speech therapy and occupational therapy services to students in need of training. We also cater to students' learning differences through curriculum design, diverse teaching strategies, homework and assessment adjustments, aiming to enhance the learning outcomes of students with special educational needs. Our school closely collaborates with the Education Bureau and professionals such as educational psychologists, conducting regular individual meetings and student assessments. We also invite parents to participate in meetings and workshops.
(3) Education Support for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Students : Our school provides additional support for NCS students to facilitate their learning of Chinese: appointing additional teacher(s)/teaching assistant(s) to support NCS students’ learning of Chinese; and organising activities to create an inclusive learning environment in the school.
(4) Measures to Provide Adaptation for Learning and Assessment : There is one uniform test and two examinations every year. Continuous assessment, which takes into account of performance in class, regular assignments and quizzes, constitutes 20% of students' overall results.
Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos
(1) Home-School Co-operation : Maintaining a close liaison with our parents is of great importance to us. In addition to the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), our school organises various events such as Parents' Nights and Parents' Days. The PTA arranges educational talks, workshops, interest groups, fellowship activities, and picnics for parents. Parents are also encouraged to volunteer and assist in conducting school activities. Furthermore, we provide regular newsletters to keep parents updated with the latest news.
(2) School Ethos : The School Ethos is established based on the teachings of the Holy Scriptures. Our students embody traits of modesty, self-discipline, and a strong desire to learn. The relationship between teachers and students is characterized by warmth and care. To provide guidance and support to our students, we have two school social workers from the Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association, an educational psychologist from Sheng Kung Hui, Speech Therapist and experienced teachers who offer counseling services. In S.1 and S.2, each class is assigned two form teachers to ensure enhanced pastoral care.
Future Development
(1) School Development Plan : Our school's Major Concerns in the three-year cycle (2024-2027) include:
1. Learning Means
2. Lamwooers’ Wellness
(2) Teacher Professional Training and Development : Teachers are encouraged and supported in their professional development through continuing education, portfolio building, professional exchanges and lesson studies. We aim at building the school into a learning organisation. Talks, visits and interflow programmes are organised for teachers every year.
Life-wide Learning (Including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be Provided through Key Learning Areas, Extra-curricular Activities, Co-curricular Activities, etc.) : We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities, with over 50 types to choose from. These activities cover various interest areas, including academic study, interest classes, art, music, and sports training courses. Additionally, we organise annual leadership training camps for both junior and senior students. Our students regularly participate in cultural functions, visits, exhibitions, and overseas English study tours. They also engage in various types of study, join exchange programmes, and take part in social service tours to both mainland China and other overseas countries.
Others : To encourage student progress and multifaceted development, we offer more than 80 different categories of scholarships. These scholarships include academic scholarships, conduct scholarships, academic progress awards, and religious education awards. The Incorporated Management Committee, the Lam Woo Foundation, and generous alumni have established several academic and non-academic scholarships to recognize outstanding student performance in various areas. During our 40th anniversary celebration, we raised over one million Hong Kong dollars to establish the All-round Education Fund. This fund provides subsidies to students from low-income families, enabling them to participate in extracurricular activities, leadership training programmes, and overseas study tours. Additionally, our students have received prestigious scholarships such as the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Scholarship, Grantham Scholarship, and the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme. In recent years, students like Shirley Wong, Thomas Yau, Ivy Wong, Jack Law, Larry Fong, Sam Li, Edwin Li, William Yau, and Hannah Au received the scholarships to pursue their studies at overseas universities, including the University of Cambridge. Our students have also achieved remarkable success in inter-school and international competitions in academic study, art, music, and sports. For instance, our Mixed Voice Choir was awarded the Grand Championship among 238 choirs at the 13th China International Chorus Festival in 2016. Our Senior Mixed Voice Choir has been in the 12th World Choir Games held in Gangneung, Korea in July 2023. The choir has awarded the Gold Medal in the category of Mixed Youth Choirs. For more detailed information about our students' achievements, please visit our school website.
